INRUD was established in 1989 with the goal of promoting the rational use of pharmaceuticals. INRUD's strategies include:
Taking an interdisciplinary approach to promoting rational drug use;
Focusing research, planning, and implementation efforts based on recommendations of local experts from the public and private sectors, universities, and NGOs;
Widespread sharing of technical information, successes, and lessons learned;
Conducting research studies to understand the behavioral aspects of drug use, particularly the beliefs and motivations of providers and consumers;
Developing replicable interventions, based on research, to improve drug use;
Developing practical research tools, including simplifies sampling and data collection strategies and user-accesible computer software.
